What does John 21:15-19 say?

Peter denied Jesus three times and wept bitterly. If the Christian answer were "forgive yourself," this is exactly where the Bible would put it.

It doesn't. It puts a charcoal fire on a beach — and Jesus asking three times, one for each denial, "Do you love Me?" Then: "Feed My sheep." Then: "Follow Me." (John 21:15–19 NKJV)

Peter did not forgive Peter. Jesus restored Peter — and then gave him work.

for Peter. He had told Jesus at the table that he would die with him if he had to. That night in a courtyard warming his hands at a fire, he denied he had ever known him three times. And then a rooster crowed. And the text says he went out and wept bitterly.

Now, if the Christian answer to Peter's situation were, "Forgive yourself," this is where the Bible would put it. This is the perfect place for it. The Bible does not put it there. The Bible puts a different scene there. A charcoal fire, the same smell as the one in the courtyard by the Sea of Tiberius after the resurrection.

Jesus cooks breakfast and he asks Peter three times, one for each denial, "Do you love me?" Peter does not forgive Peter. Jesus restores Peter. And then Jesus gives him work. Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep.

Feed my sheep. And then a call. Follow me.
