Is Soul Sleep Biblical? What John 11 and Stephen Show
0:51 Short
What does John 11 say?
The Bible calls death "sleep," and Ecclesiastes says "the dead know nothing." Sincere Christians, including Seventh-day Adventists, believe the dead are unconscious until the resurrection, and they're right that the resurrection is the great hope. But in John 11:13–14 Jesus explains "sleep" as a figure of speech, and Stephen prayed "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit" before "he fell asleep" (Acts 7:59–60). God "is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him" (Luke 20:38).
