What Happens the Moment You Die? What the Bible Actually Says

23:26 Questions about Christianity

What does 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 say?

What happens the moment you take your last breath? Do Christians go straight to heaven, or sleep until the resurrection? What about purgatory, near-death experiences, or the claim that "the mind is just the brain"?

In this episode of Life's Hardest Questions, we walk through what the Bible actually says, starting with 2 Corinthians 5:1–10, Jesus' promise to the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43), Paul's "far better" (Philippians 1:23), and Stephen's last prayer (Acts 7:59–60). You'll learn the "two moments" that clear up most of the confusion: the moment you die, and the moment Jesus returns.

We also look fairly at soul sleep, purgatory, materialism, and near-death research; show how to start this conversation with a friend; share the Gospel; and end in prayer.

The short answer: The Bible teaches that for believers, to be "absent from the body" is to be "present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8), which Paul calls "far better" (Philippians 1:23). That is not the end of the story: when Jesus returns, the dead will be raised with new bodies (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; 1 Corinthians 15:51–55). Everyone will face judgment (Hebrews 9:27), and eternal life is a gift through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23).
