What does John 8:58 say?
You've heard it: "Jesus never said the words 'I am God.'" Technically true. Here's what He said instead.
In John 8:58 Jesus says, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM" — claiming to exist before Abraham and taking the divine name God gave Moses in Exodus 3:14 ("I AM WHO I AM"). The crowd picked up stones, the penalty for blasphemy under Leviticus 24. They understood exactly what He claimed.
