1993. Tel Dan, in northern Israel. A team led by archaeologist Avraham Biran found a fragment of a 9th century BC basalt stela, inscribed in Old Aramaic. It contains the phrase bytdwd - "House of David" - and it names Jehoram of Israel and Ahaziah of the House of David.
It is the earliest extra-biblical reference we have to David as founder of a Judahite kingdom.
