Is the Universe Fine-Tuned? The Number Physicists Argue About

Verdict up front: fine-tuning is a real argument, it is not a proof, and the famous number attached to it is disputed by physicists. Here's the whole picture in sixty seconds.

The cosmological constant is the usual headline. The value governing the expansion of space appears to sit inside a range of roughly one part in 10^120 for a universe with structure in it. Luke Barnes surveys the case in "The Fine-Tuning of the Universe for Intelligent Life" (Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 2012).

Here's the part you don't usually hear in a video like this. That 10^120 figure is contested inside physics itself. Jérôme Martin's 2012 review, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Cosmological Constant Problem (But Were Afraid To Ask)," argues that the properly renormalised value of the zero-point energy density today, for a free theory, "is in fact far from being 122 orders of magnitude larger than the critical energy density." The dispute is real and it is internal to the field. We're telling you because you'd find out anyway, and you should hear it from us first.

So what's left? Not a knockdown. Fine-tuning is one strand among several, and it's a live scientific argument rather than a settled one. If someone hands you this number as a conversation-ender, they've oversold it. If someone tells you it's nothing, they've undersold it.
