Does John 1:1 Really Say "the Word Was a God"?
0:41 Short
What does John 1:1 say?
The New World Translation renders John 1:1, "the Word was a god," arguing that because theos has no definite article it must be indefinite.
But the missing article doesn't make theos "a god." Most Greek grammarians, including Daniel Wallace (Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics), read it as qualitative: the Word has the full nature of God while remaining a distinct person from the Father. If John had meant the Word was the Father, he would have used the article. And no first-century monotheistic Jew could have written that the Word was one god among many.
