What does Psalms 14:1 say?

Pew's Religious Landscape Study, released February 2025, found that 83% of U.S. adults still believe in God or a universal spirit — but only 54% believe with absolute certainty, down 17 points since 2007. Belief itself fell 9 points in that time. Certainty fell nearly twice as fast. If you believe and you're not sure, you are not an outlier. You're the trend.

One thing we want to say plainly. Psalm 14:1 (NKJV) reads: "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good." The Hebrew word behind "fool" is nabal — it's about moral folly and willful refusal, not low intelligence. The same word names the man in 1 Samuel 25. We won't use that verse as an insult, and if you've had it thrown at you, that was a misuse of it. Doubt is not stupidity, and honest uncertainty is not corruption.

This series is for the un-sure. Not for winning arguments against committed atheists, and not for reassuring people who were never wobbling. Four arguments, each held to what it actually establishes and no further, with the objections stated at full strength before any answer is given.

1 Peter 3:15 (NKJV): "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;" Note the last three words. They aren't optional.
