Scripture reflection

When prayer feels like silence

Psalm 13 opens with a question most of us have prayed at some point: "How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?"

David doesn't dress it up. He tells God exactly how it feels: forgotten, sorrowful, worn down.

What strikes me is where the psalm goes in just six verses. Nothing in his circumstances changes on the page, yet he ends with: "But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me."

The turn isn't that the silence broke. It's that David remembered who he was talking to. Honest lament and real trust sit in the same prayer, and God kept both in Scripture for us.

If you're in a quiet season right now, you're in good company. Keep praying the honest prayer.

How have you held on to trust when God felt far away?
