Sin

Wrath and Uncontrolled Anger

What the Bible Says

Sinful wrath is explosive, uncontrolled anger that seeks to harm rather than to correct. Scripture distinguishes between righteous indignation and the destructive anger that flows from selfishness and a lack of self-control.

Scripture Teaching

Proverbs 14:29 teaches, "He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, but he who is impulsive exalts folly." James 1:19-20 instructs, "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God." Ephesians 4:26-27 warns, "Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil." Proverbs 15:1 adds, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Unresolved anger provides an opportunity for the devil to gain a foothold in a person's life.

How It Applies Today

Anger itself is not always sinful — even God is described as having righteous anger — but uncontrolled anger that is self-serving and destructive is clearly condemned. Believers are called to be slow to anger and quick to listen, allowing God to work rather than reacting impulsively. Dealing with anger promptly and humbly prevents bitterness from taking root.
