Sin
Theft and Stealing
What the Bible Says
Theft is the taking of what belongs to another without their consent. Scripture condemns stealing and calls believers to honest labor and generosity instead.
Scripture Teaching
Exodus 20:15 commands, "You shall not steal." Ephesians 4:28 provides both the prohibition and the remedy: "Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need." Proverbs 10:2 warns, "Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death." Leviticus 19:11 reinforces, "You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another." The Bible connects stealing not only to dishonesty but to a failure to trust God as the provider of all needs.
How It Applies Today
Stealing takes many forms beyond obvious theft — dishonesty in business, failing to give an honest day's work, or taking credit for what others have done. God calls believers to replace taking with giving, working honestly so they can be generous toward those in need. Trusting God as provider removes the temptation to take what is not ours.
