Selfishness

What the Bible Says

Selfishness is an excessive concern for oneself at the expense of others. Scripture identifies self-seeking as contrary to the mind of Christ and a source of disorder and evil.

Scripture Teaching

Philippians 2:3-4 instructs, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." James 3:14-16 warns, "But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there." Second Timothy 3:2 lists being "lovers of themselves" as a characteristic of people in the last days. The example of Christ, who emptied Himself and became a servant, stands as the ultimate rebuke of self-centered living.

How It Applies Today

Selfishness is the natural inclination of the fallen heart, but the gospel calls believers to a radically different way of living — considering others as more important than themselves. Following the example of Christ means serving others rather than demanding to be served. A life marked by generosity and self-sacrifice reflects the character of Jesus.
