Sin

Lying and Falsehood

What the Bible Says

Lying is the deliberate communication of falsehood with the intent to deceive. Scripture identifies lying as an abomination to the Lord and a characteristic of those who reject Him.

Scripture Teaching

Proverbs 12:22 states, "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight." Colossians 3:9 commands believers directly: "Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds." Revelation 21:8 includes liars among those who will have their part in the lake of fire. Exodus 20:16 prohibits bearing false witness against one's neighbor. Jesus identified Satan as the father of lies in John 8:44, establishing that falsehood has its origin in the enemy of God.

How It Applies Today

Lying damages trust, destroys relationships, and stands in direct opposition to the character of God, who is truth. Believers are called to speak the truth in love, even when it is difficult or costly. A commitment to truthfulness reflects the nature of Christ and builds a life of integrity.
