Hypocrisy
What the Bible Says
Hypocrisy is the practice of pretending to have moral standards or beliefs that one does not actually live by. Scripture exposes it as a form of deception that masks an unchanged heart.
Scripture Teaching
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees in Matthew 23:27-28: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." Romans 12:9 instructs, "Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good." First Peter 2:1 includes hypocrisy among the things believers are to lay aside. Jesus consistently reserved His harshest criticism for those who performed religion outwardly while their hearts remained far from God.
How It Applies Today
Hypocrisy is a constant temptation for religious people — appearing godly while living contrary to God's commands in private. Scripture calls believers to let their love be genuine and their worship sincere. Authenticity before God and others is the mark of a heart that has been truly transformed by the gospel.
