Sin
Drunkenness
What the Bible Says
Drunkenness is the loss of self-control through the excessive consumption of alcohol. Scripture warns that it leads to poor judgment, sin, and separation from godly conduct.
Scripture Teaching
Proverbs 20:1 warns, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise." Ephesians 5:18 contrasts drunkenness with the filling of the Spirit: "And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit." Galatians 5:21 lists drunkenness among the works of the flesh and warns that "those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." Proverbs 23:29-35 provides a vivid description of the sorrow, suffering, and foolishness that accompany drunkenness. Isaiah 5:11 pronounces woe upon those who rise early to pursue strong drink.
How It Applies Today
Drunkenness impairs judgment, opens the door to other sins, and undermines the self-control that the Holy Spirit produces in the life of a believer. Scripture calls believers to be filled with the Spirit rather than controlled by alcohol. Sobriety and self-control honor God and protect the testimony of the believer.
