Blasphemy

What the Bible Says

Blasphemy is showing contempt or irreverence toward God, whether through speech, attitude, or action. Scripture treats it as a grave offense because it dishonors the name and character of the Almighty.

Scripture Teaching

Exodus 20:7 commands, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain." Leviticus 24:16 declares, "And whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death." Jesus warned in Matthew 12:31, "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men." Colossians 3:8 instructs believers to put away blasphemy along with other sins of speech. Blasphemy reflects a heart that does not fear God or regard His holiness.

How It Applies Today

Blasphemy includes not only cursing God's name but treating Him with casual disregard or misrepresenting His character. Believers are called to honor God's name in every word and action, recognizing His holiness and majesty. A reverent fear of God is the foundation for right speech and right living.
