Straight answer to the title, ten seconds in: no. Consciousness does not disprove materialism. Here's what it actually does. There's something it is like to be you. Not just neurons firing — the redness of red, the feel of cold water. David Chalmers named this the "hard problem" in "Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness" (Journal of Consciousness Studies 2:3, 1995): the easy problems are about what the brain does, and the hard problem is why any of that doing is accompanied by experience at all. Serious materialists have serious replies, and the debate is wide open. What the hard problem does is put a genuine strain on the view that the physical story is the whole story — a strain that has kept some of the best philosophers in the field busy for thirty years without a settled resolution. That's worth something, and it isn't worth everything. Consciousness on its own doesn't get you to God, and it certainly doesn't get you to the God of the New Testament. Luke Barnes surveys the case in "The Fine-Tuning of the Universe for Intelligent Life" (Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 2012). Here's the part you don't usually hear in a video like this. That 10^120 figure is contested inside physics itself. Jérôme Martin's 2012 review, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Cosmological Constant Problem (But Were Afraid To Ask)," argues that the properly renormalised value of the zero-point energy density today, for a free theory, "is in fact far from being 122 orders of magnitude larger than the critical energy density." The dispute is real and it is internal to the field. We're telling you because you'd find out anyway, and you should hear it from us first. So what's left? Not a knockdown. Fine-tuning is one strand among several, and it's a live scientific argument rather than a settled one. If someone hands you this number as a conversation-ender, they've oversold it. An omnipotent being could remove suffering. An omniscient being would know how. A wholly good being would want to. Suffering exists. Mackie's conclusion was that the three claims can't all be true together. Most replies to Mackie work by adjusting one of those terms — arguing that a good God might permit suffering for reasons we're not positioned to see, or that free creatures capable of love are worth the cost of creatures capable of harm. Those replies are serious, they're not obviously wrong, and none of them will feel adequate to somebody in the middle of it. We're not going to pretend otherwise, and we're not going to hand you a tidy answer for a child's cancer ward. What the episode does is put this objection first, at full strength, before making any case at all. If an argument for God can't survive being placed next to this one, it isn't worth much. If God wants to be known, why isn't He obvious? That's not a cheap shot. The philosopher J. L. Schellenberg put it carefully in Divine Hiddenness and Human Reason (Cornell University Press, 1993). His claim is not that atheists have never heard the arguments. It's about non-resistant nonbelief — people who are open, who would believe if they had reason to, and who still don't. If a perfectly loving God is always open to a relationship, Schellenberg argues, those people shouldn't exist. But they do. Notice what the argument concedes and what it doesn't. It isn't an argument that the universe is godless. It's an argument that this particular God — always open, perfectly loving — doesn't fit the evidence of who actually believes. Any answer worth giving has to meet it on that ground, not somewhere easier. In 2003, Arvind Borde, Alan Guth and Alexander Vilenkin published "Inflationary spacetimes are not past-complete" in Physical Review Letters 90, 151301. Their conclusion, in their own words: "inflationary models require physics other than inflation to describe the past boundary of the inflating region of spacetime." Read that carefully, because a lot of Christian videos don't. The BGV theorem is a constraint on past-eternal inflationary models. It is not a proof of creation from nothing. Vilenkin has said as much himself: "my own view is that the theorem does not tell us anything about the existence of God." We're not going to quote a physicist against his own meaning to win a point. What the theorem does is close a door — the universe probably isn't past-eternal in the way people once assumed — and leave the question of what's on the other side genuinely open. Sean McDowell's The Fate of the Apostles is the careful study here, and it's careful in both directions: he argues the deaths of Peter, Paul, James the brother of Jesus, and James the son of Zebedee are historically well-supported, while noting the evidence for several of the others doesn't meet that standard. Even Bart Ehrman, who does not believe in the resurrection, grants that the followers of Jesus came to genuinely believe they had seen him alive.
